The Bathroom Chronicles - Part II

Hey.... I'm back! Here is the rest of the story!
~K

Episode 2: Toilet Trauma

When we left K, she was waiting to see if her dad would be reinstalling the upstairs toilet after the entire household had lived about 36 hours without it. A repair job that was supposed to take a couple of hours had already morphed into a two-day project. She hoped and wished that the project would soon be complete.

As she sat on the couch that night watching television, she heard the bad news. The contact cement had set and was holding the tiles in place, but now the grout did indeed need 24 hours to set. The toilet would not be returned to its proper place on Monday night.

So, there was another morning of dodging the other people in the house and waiting for her turn to use the downstairs bathroom. The good news was that the toilet was no longer in the bathtub, so at least that was usable. K's dad had the day off on Tuesday, which she hoped would afford him the opportunity to finish the toilet repair job.

She returned home on Tuesday night to find that there had been yet another set back. Something to do with the tile or the wax seal or something. She would have to endure yet another day with only one available toilet in the house. "Arrgghhh!!" she cried out in frustration!!

Finally, four days after the project began, the toilet was put back in its place on Wednesday evening. K could hardly believe it was finally happening. Ah, the satisfaction of pushing the lever down, the sweet flushing sound, the marvelous sight of the swirling water. All of these filled K with joy and hope. For, it is the simple things in life that are important - a place to call home, family, friends, laughter, and functional plumbing. Definitely functional plumbing.

The Bathroom Chronicles - Part I

Crazy Daisy's friend "K" here. We used to work together and have become good friends over the last several years. We especially enjoy entertaining each other with dramatic stories of the random things that happen to us in our every day lives. As it turns out, this is perfect blog material. Since I don't have my own blog (though Crazy Daisy thinks I should), she asked if she could post the story of one of my recent adventures on her blog. The following is a true story, though any references to specific people or places have been changed to protect the innocent . . .

Episode 1: Five People, One Toilet

It all began early on Sunday morning. K lay sleeping soundly in her bed. Unbeknownst to her, her dad was in the bathroom next to her room . . . wreaking havoc. The idea was to replace a leaky wax seal around the bottom of the toilet. He removed the toilet and put it in the bathtub, rendering both of them useless.

K awoke to the sound of a vacuum. She put a pillow over head only to be awoken once more, this time by a knock on the door and a request for her hair dryer. She went back to bed, figuring she would just get up when the bathroom repairs were complete. Unfortunately, it was not to be.

12 noon came around, and she had to get out of bed. Her dad was nowhere to be found, though the bathroom radio was blaring and the light was on. She called him on his cell phone only to find out that several pieces of tile needed to be reset, so he was off to the hardware store to get some contact cement. She wanted so badly to wash her hair, but as the toilet was in the bathtub, she could not fulfill this desire.

Her dad eventually returned, applied the contact cement, and relayed the news that the cement takes 24 hours to cure. "24 hours!!" K cried. That meant the whole family - five people - would have to use the one bathroom, with the shower curtain for a door, downstairs. As you can imagine, it was very upsetting.

K went to the YMCA so she could take a shower. She managed to cope fairly well that first day, once she got used to the idea of the toilet in the tub. Oh, how she wished her dad had given her fair warning early that morning before he started his work. She and her mom did have one minor success, however, when they convinced him Sunday evening to take the toilet out of the bathtub, so at least the tub could be used. He moved the toilet to a washtub in the hallway.

Monday morning came. She thought things would be fine as her brother usually slept all day and her mom would leave to go work out. Only, her brother foiled her brilliant plan. As if by some miracle, he was up at 8:00 AM, occupying the toilet-less bathroom. She waited, so she could put her hair back and get to her toothbrush. Finally, the bathroom was hers. Now, as most people do when they first get up in the morning, she also needed to visit the bathroom with a toilet. Only, she knew her brother generally made several trips up and down the stairs in the morning to pick up things he forgot or put things away. The bathroom with shower curtain was dead center in the journey between the kitchen and the upstairs. She figured he would be done and out the door soon, so she would wait. And, did she wait. She waited and waited. She heard him come up and down the stairs at least three times. She saw him warm up his car outside and shut it off again. She waited and waited. As anyone knows, everything feels 10 times longer when one is waiting for the bathroom.

Finally, after several false alarms, he left. Sweet relief. She went off to work where she knew they had at least three working toilets on each floor.

Monday night, she returned home to a house with one toilet. Now she waits. She waits to see if the tile can be set and the toilet returned to its home. She imagines horrible scenarios in which she finds out that the grout needs 24 hours to set before the toilet can be set in its place. What will happen next? Stay tuned . . .

We own a house!!!

I cannot come close to explaining how excited I am...

... Stay tuned!

November 23, 2008

Tomorrow, we are buying a house!

Yes, we are down to the final hours. Tomorrow morning, we will be signing papers to purchase our very our home. We are very excited. I could (and likely eventually will) list all the reasons I'm ready for a house, and ready to move out of the apartment!

The anxiety producing part now is... well there are a couple.

  1. We still have A LOT to pack!
  2. We are allowing the previous owners to stay in the house until Wednesday. Yeah, WHAT were we thinking? I guess at the time, it didn't really matter to us. What is a couple more days when we have waited this long? Well, come to find out, it is going to be a L O N G waiting time between Monday and Wednesday.

With everything going on this week, packing, buying a house, moving and then Thanksgiving, I might not be around as much, at least in blog land. However rest assured my wonderful friend K will have a couple guest posts up this week. PLEASE stop by, she has a wonderful way of writing. I have been trying to convince her to blog... maybe you all can help me convince her! :-)

Oh, have you posted your junk for my JUNK carnival? Don't forget to check it out! Plus, check out those blogs that have! :-)

That is all for now! I wish you all a wonderful week!

Have Junk - Carnival!!!

My husband and I have nearly perfected the "Oh Crap, we have company coming in 12 hours. Let's hide the junk."

We try to clean in advance, however there always seems to be a last minute rush to pick up the last of the laundry, or pile of clothes, dishes, or just the random stuff... the junk.

In moving/packing, we are really trying to not take junk with us. I have made a point to sort before putting things in boxes.

Here is a prime example.

One junk drawer:

Pens. Pencils. Tape. Highlighters. Whiteout. Crayons. Colored Pencils. Pencil sharpener. Random other items... A complete mess.

I shorted out a bunch of it. Then called husband over to pick out anything we "had" to have and I had missed.

I took a hilarious video with his picking through the drawer. His excitement was like a kid in a candy store.

Here is what we ended up with.

Not terrible I suppose, but more than I had wanted.

So I want to know: What does your junk drawer look like? What kind of junk is in the drawer? Is it similar to mine? Totally different? How long did it take to get like that? hehe... :) Please, do share!

I want to see pictures.

I want the details.

I'm calling a Spur of the moment Bloggy Carnival!!!

Really?

Remember yesterday we picked up some yummy Caribou white hot chocolate on the way home from picking up some packing boxes?

We got an entire pickup load of boxes from a kind person giving them away on freecycle... If you haven't tried out freecycle, it is amazing!

Anyhow... the moving boxes had already been broken down, so this evening I spent a little time putting them back together.

In the process I noticed this...

I guess I knew they were "used" moving boxes...

I... we love Caribou

Remember this day... I sure do.

My very first visit to a coffee house.

Well, since then, I have occasionally visited the local Caribou. The white hot chocolate is the only thing I get. It is perfection. There is no reason to risk anything else. :-)

Okay. One of our trips to visit the broker, tour the house, visit with our agent... I can't remember, however I picked up a white hot chocolate. My husband took a sip....

OH. MY. GOSH. The look on his face was worth a million words. I knew that look; the look of forever being hooked. The "I drank out of it, it is mine. mine. MINE!" Hehe. Okay, so he did share, however from then on each time I got a white hot choc, I would get a large, so we could share.

Tonight, we went out to pick up some free packing boxes (thank you to freecycle!!!), and on our way back, we stopped at the Caribou.

I went in, and ordered one large for me.

Then, I thought. "Hey. I'll surprise husband. We each get our own tonight!".

So I ordered 2.

I waited.

And waited.

And waited....

FINALLY, my order was up. The kind women handed me the carrier and said. Hey, thanks for waiting. I accidentally made three, would you want the other one?

HUH!? Really?

She already had it in the carrier handing it to me.

Ummm.... OF COURSE I'LL TAKE A FREE WHITE HOT CHOCOLATE!

When I got back to the car, husband saw two of the cups and gave me a quick smile.

Then I spun the carrier around to show the 3rd... boy did he have a puzzled, but excited look on his face!

I explained, and then we proceeded to pick his up to take a drink and he says...

"LARGE!? We got a free large!?"

Oh, The simple things in life.

Wacky Web Wednesday #26 Who Needs Pockets?

Seriously? And it is no big deal to her. It is as if that is where everyone puts their frogs...

Thanks to my friend K who sent me this cute video!

New toy

We had have our eye on a toaster oven for some time now. The benefits of not heating the entire oven for just the 2 of us makes so much sense! Plus the health benefits of not using a microwave...

Anyhow, even with our budget being very tight with the house buying, we gave in and got one at costco! They had an Oster toaster/convection oven marked down from $80 to $50! It thus far has been amazing! I'm going to try using it's dehydrating function on some bananas tonight!!!

The Results are in...

I don't like to get political on my blog... however, these results make me so happy...

Then I found this over at Adventures in Randomness

HEHE... guess it didn't work...

Saying goodbye

I swear... I will get better at this blogging thing. I remember the days were I posted, rain or shine, 8am, or 3am...

... life keeps getting in the way. Last week, my grandfather passed away. Since then, I have been trying to balance between family time, professional time (work etc), and me time. It is hard. I really haven't had a chance to process everything.

I grew up on a farm/ranch in the middle of no where. My grandparents lived in the same yard. I could see their house from my front step. They were always there for me. When I was little, I would "run away" to grandma and grandpa. When I was a teenager, I would sit with grandma at the kitchen table, drinking tea, and talk about anything and everything. Grandpa would let me rid in the tractor with him, and in the evening, we would sit and listen to his stories...

Grandma passed away last year. I think saying goodbye to her was one of the most difficult things I have ever had to do. Now and then, I still find a tear escapes in her memory. Now grandpa is gone too. Tears have rolled down my face, however there is still a feeling of something unfinished.

... I guess I'll see what tomorrow brings.
